Aiming to provide writers with a workshop they could attend in the same manner dancers, musicians and athletes attend 'regular practice', Matthew Curlewis founded Amsterdam
Writers in 2009. His 8 week cycle Writers'
Stretch and Tone has been on offer ever since.
After many years running at the Binger Filmlab, the workshops now take place
in the Amsterdam Writers office (pictured below) in the historic Beurs van Berlage building.
Matthew became certified as a workshop leader
in the internationally recognized Amherst
Writers and Artists method in 2005, at a retreat led by organization founder
Pat Schneider. He discovered this work during two years attending New York's Manhattan Writers
and a number of writing groups in Provincetown, Mass.
From 2006-08 Matthew led consistently sold out creative writing
and screenwriting workshops with Amsterdam's international
literary collective wordsinhere, before beginning Amsterdam Writers.
In 2014
Matthew also launched Amsterdam Writers Flex, a website for Writers' Stretch & Tone participants to share new and ongoing work.
